Collection requirement

From 2024, there is a legal requirement that food waste must be sorted and collected separately from households and businesses. If you run a business, this will be a new feature of the way you process waste in, for example, the kitchen, catering facilities, sales and any staff areas.

The municipality is responsible for the food waste that is sorted from businesses, which means that it is the only collector with permission to collect the waste from you.

What is covered by the collection requirement

All businesses that generate food waste are subject to the collection requirement. Examples of this kind of waste are:

  • Leftovers from serving food.
  • Food from grocery stores and catering facilities that cannot be sold.
  • Food waste from staff areas.
  • Liquid fats.

When the new two-compartment bin has been delivered, put it on one side and store it until the old bin has been emptied for the last time.

What is NOT covered by the collection requirement

  • Liquid food waste that is not fat, such as milk, juice, coffee, etc.
  • Waste from the manufacturing process in the food and manufacturing industries. Examples of these include bakeries, abattoirs, breweries, etc.
