These are the benefits of digesting food waste

Waste is digested at a biogas plant, and it is possible to extract both nutrients and energy through this process.

Biogas is the name given to the gas that is formed during anaerobic digestion and cleaned to remove the carbon dioxide, so it can be used as fuel for vehicles. After the digestion process has been completed, a so-called digestate is left over, which is used as fertiliser in agriculture, as it contains valuable nutrients that are required to enable new crops to grow.

Why don’t we have multi-compartment bins like they do in Härnösand?

In Kramfors, we feel that dual compartment bins are more optimal and suit our municipality better than four-compartment bins, for reasons to do with all elements of sustainable development. It is better from an environmental point of view, better from an economic perspective and provides a safer work environment for our drivers.

It has also not been possible to start a system similar to the one in Härnösand, which has bins with 4 compartments for the home. Until the turn of the year 2024, responsibility for collecting packaging materials has rested with producers, so this has not been financed by the municipal waste collection tariff. Only systems that have been in operation since before 2018 (which is the case in Härnösand) have been allowed to continue with this collection system during a transitional period.
