Hesa Fredrik, the civil defence siren, is tested
Four times a year, always on a Monday at 15.00, many people across Sweden hear a sustained alarm signal. The civil defence siren is being tested all over the country.
In Sweden, we have an outdoor alarm system consisting of about 4,500 signal horns sitting on rooftops or other high places.
The signal horns have four different signals, but only two signals are tested. First, the signal for "Important Public Announcement" is tested, and then the signal for "All Clear" is tested.
What happens during the test:
First, the signal sounds continuously for seven seconds, which is followed by 14 seconds of silence. The signal test lasts for at least two minutes. At 15.05, the All Clear signal sounds, which is a sustained signal lasting 30 seconds.
How do you know if it's a test?
The test alarm described above is different from the alarms used in an actual emergency.
If the government needs to announce that there is an imminent risk of war or that the country is under attack, a readiness alarm is sounded. Then a 30-second signal is sounded, followed by a 15-second gap. This is repeated for five minutes.
The air raid alarm is used to warn the public if the military detects an imminent air attack. An air raid alarm consists of a series of short tones lasting for one minute.
